Alias News
As we near the end of season four, Co-Executive Producer Jesse Alexander talks about the season finale. "I think people are going to be very excited about some of the big revelations that come at the end of this season, there are some huge surprises! People who have been fans of the show since the beginning will be very excited and surprised to see who we get to come in at the end of the season."
The Good Guy
Being Michael Vaughn has never been an easy ride, danger, intrigue, terrorist threats and murderous psychopaths. This month actor, Michael Vartan talks to us about his time on Alias. Vartan comments on the similarities between himself and Vaughn. "I think I am a relatively decent person and I hope to be honorable, as much as possible. I don't want to say Vaughn is a cliché of a good guy, but he's USA all the way and loyal to the job and flag. He's just a good guy, through and through. I wouldn't mind him going nuts for a couple of episodes… that would be fun to play."
One of the hottest subjects on Alias, remains Vaughn and Sydney's, on/off relationship, and this month Vartan gives his side of the story. "It's so much more fun to play the forbidden fruit side of it. Those characters have been through so much! Sydney says in the beginning of this season, 'We need to take it slow,' and I think that has been the case this year. It's good because they have all these unresolved feelings and they don't know where they're going."
Alias attracts more than its fair share of high profile guest stars and Vartan reflects on some of the actors who have appeared on the show. "My favorite was Quentin Tarantino. I'd never met him and I'm a huge fan of his movies, but the guy brought so much enthusiasm to that character. Of all the actors I've ever worked with, I've never seen someone be more into something, it was an amazing breath of fresh air. He's such a huge part of this industry and he just dropped everything and for two episodes was just a big kid and got into it so deeply. We've had some huge Hollywood icons on the show and I think it speaks volumes of how our show is perceived and it's really flattering."
Weisser Than Weiss
During the early episodes of season four Agent Weiss was noticeable for his absence. Greg Grunberg reflects on first few episodes of season four. "I was like, 'What's going on?' You can just imagine Weiss at the water cooler alone going, 'Did anybody see Survivor?' I have nobody to talk to! 'Was it me? Was it something I said?'" however, since he has rejoined the gang at APO, life is getting much better for Weiss in more ways than one. "Season four is a bigger season for me because I have a love interest now with Nadia. Mia Maestro is so wonderful - she is great to act with and we have great chemistry. We have a few episodes of flirting and then we start dating. It's so great because she is Sloane's daughter! Imagine having Arvin Sloane as your father-in-law! It's the craziest!
Romancing The Sloane
Marshall Flinkman is one of the best loved characters of Alias, and Kevin Weisman thinks he knows why, "I think people like rooting for the underdog, the show is so serious and I think people enjoy a bit of comic relief. I think they enjoy both my and Greg Grunberg's character, Weiss, because we provide a little levity and a little reality." Weisman also explains how he would love to get out of the lab more and go on more missions. "I love doing aliases! I want them to write more stuff for me. I am going out on another one but I'm not sure how many more. It is not official not but it might have to do with being a DJ. I play in a band [Trainwreck] so my idea was to end up in a sleepy southern town where Sydney has to pose as a singer and I'll play the drums. Jen is a great singer so I want her to sing a little country ditty." You heard it here first folks - could Alias: The Cast Album be next?
The Modern Rambaldi
Chris Call is the Alias Props Master, responsible for, amongst other things, the amazing Rambaldi artifacts. After four seasons of creating the artifacts he knows a thing or two about the objects, for instance the secret of what's behind the sphere, "I've told J.J. [Abrams] that it's the soul of his crew in that orb." He and his teams also have a theory or two of their own about the 15th century prophet. "We though it was going to be Sloane - that he would show up as Rambaldi, that he is still alive. But it could go anywhere - you never know with J.J. - you can think you know exactly what's happening, and then the next moment it's all different."
Drew Goddard
One of the Alias new recruits for season four was writer Drew Goddard. After honing his skills on Buffy and Angel, he's no stranger to fast paced action and intriguing plots. It seems that Goddard was destined to find Alias "I was always a big spy guy. I loved John le Carre. Growing up it was hard not to have spies on the mind because James Bond was everywhere." Goddard gives us a glimpse into the workings of the Alias writers' room. "J.J. really comes in and sets the stage with the arc and what the episodes should be during the season and then we take that structure and fill it in. He pops back and gives suggestions and we do things accordingly, but [Executive Producer/Show Runner] Jeff Melvoin runs the day-to-day operations. It's more of a committee approach to writing, but it all really comes down to how much time there is before they need the script." We also hear Goddard's critique of his first Alias episode, Welcome to Liberty Village.
Word from the top
Season four has been different to that of the previous three seasons because of it longer lead time and therefore it hasn't been possible to incorporate the fan reactions into the episodes. Co-Executive Producer Jesse Alexander reflects on how this has affected their approach to the show. The extra time has been useful for other reasons too, "It especially helped us with the season premiere, because there were a couple of sequences in that episode that we wanted to go back and re-do. J.J. [Abrams] directed an incredible new opening action sequence that the studio was very gracious in giving us more money to do." And although remaining tight lipped about what a fifth season will include, he does hint at the tone, "I don't want to say re-inventing the show again - but the show is definitely going to be heading in a fresh direction."
