Exclusive: Meet both Victor Garber and Carl Lumbly in this issue!
Jack Bristow, the Spy Daddy extraordinaire, has kept the odd thing from his super-spy daughter, Sydney, over the years: he worked with her arch enemy, Arvin Sloane, at the CIA; her mother was really a Russian agent; and he has 'removed' several people who've threatened Sydney's safety. In this issue, Victor Garber explains why Jack is so enjoyable to play. Garber praises the way the writing team developed his character:
"It's been, so far, a great collaboration. I think this year, as they have some new writers, they want to talk to us more about our ideas - but of course, I don't really have any ideas! I'm just happy to let them play!"
When asked about his thoughts on the season four premiere, Garber replied,
"I thought it was brilliant. I felt so fortunate to be in the hands of such a great master craftsman… I've always loved his [Jack's] stillness, his inscrutability. He still remains fun to play because he's so complicated!"
Meet Marcus Dixon
Marcus Dixon has been Sydney's partner, her CIA boss burdening an awful truth, and now he's returned to the field with the APO unit. Carl Lumbly reveals how he's feeling about this u-turn, protecting Sydney, and keeping one eye on Sloane at all times. Hear how Carl Lumbly felt about last season's Taken episode:
"It felt like a bit of a turning point for the character. One of the things that was a shock for me was suddenly being a director but in some ways it worked… you do what you're called upon to do, but it may not necessarily be your expertise. It was very exciting to be able to affect something directly and, granted, be a little emotionally out of control!"
When asked how he feels about his character and Rambaldi, Lumbly stated:
"It's funny. In the beginning, I thought Dixon was fairly skeptical about this entire thing [the Rambaldi mystery]. Then, in light of everything that has happened, if you believe sometimes that individuals are born with a purpose that they don't know about, it is conceivable that someone like a Rambaldi was born for a purpose. I see Rambaldi as a cross between Da Vinci, Nostradamus and some sort of a seer - someone who literally was created for a purpose."
